About the past, the present and the future

A.'s picture

Hello everyone! Did you know that the first version of our site was a WordPress blog made in 2008, and that it's still online today? That was a pretty long time ago indeed, you can visit it here if you're curious, it's a pretty small blog, some images no longer load and download links don't work anymore, but that's to be expected after 13 years. Back then we had a translation group that at a time even reached a double-digits number of members and scanlated a good amount of all the NanoFate doujins that were released in English, if not most, and a fun fact is that our first releases started just as the combined effort of a couple of people on a 4chan thread on the /u/ board.

Not trying to sound old, but back then the times were different, online communities formed in forums, and sites to host them were needed, sites like the Dynasty Reader where you can today find almost all of our releases were much smaller and reliable, it was normal for people to download doujins and read them in their computers, but right now you can read almost everything online, social media sites and other bigger sites are the home for online communities while at the same time smaller sites dedicated to specific interests like ours have become less practical, less useful and less relevant by every passing year.

And that's the main reason for this post, after so many years I think we may have reached the tipping point. The combinations of factors such as the Nanoha franchise not having anything new of substance for a couple of years, the English Nanoha community being equally dormant or people moving away to other stuff and in general the fact that we get very few new fan (or official) content to share or discuss, I think make a website such as ours unneeded. This may be obvious, but right now our team basically only has one person left, after our scanlation group with its last couple of members went inactive and we only had me left to take care of the website I always had the goal to keep it running for as long as Nanoha fans have a need for it.

Our future:
I've had great times and got to know great people through my years here, I'm very grateful about that and about everything that we contributed in the past, but all must come to an end. Nothing is set in stone yet but at the moment I'm thinking about keeping the site running until the last week of December (unless something totally unexpected like a new animated season and a resurgence of demand for the site happens, but I don't see either happening), if everything goes as expected the site should be inaccessibly permanently after this year, but that's not as bad as it sounds, in today's Internet thanks to the magic of NanoFate's love (and web archiving to a lesser degree) you will always be able to visit a snapshot of our site through the Wayback Machine (someone told me you can even access the old version of a certain novel there that we had to remove from our forum, that one we always get requests for), the download links for scanlations hosted in nanofate.us won't work through that page but you can always read everything posted here online somewhere else... or I wish you could, because the fact is that a few of the releases posted in our site, specially from the last few years don't seem to be posted anywhere else, so they may get lost forever when we go offline, and that includes some doujins from what I consider great authors.

I'm not sure what to do with the domain once I give away our hosting, I'm not sure if I can just make it redirect to the Nanoha x Fate tag on Dynasty or some other page, I don't know if that's something that can be easily done, if someone has any ideas feedback is welcome.

And that's all for now, as I said before nothing is set in stone yet, but at the moment what I said seems like the most likely scenario. Please take care and stay well.

Man, I randomly returned to this site after god knows how long due to nostalgia, and I find out it was recently announced to be closing soon. Can I know the name of the novel you were talking about, and roughly how long ago it was posted, so I can find it on the wayback machine?

It's a sad thing to see, but understandable given how things are especially with our little fandom. I've had the feeling that Nanoha has become a lot more niche in recent years, at least on the English side of things.

I too have many good memories here, from way back in 2010/2011 when a lot of the old guard on here was still around, to 2012 to 2017 or so when me and a sizeable group of others did a lot of roleplay in that ol' chatbox up there, we've since moved to a discord server of our own for that.

If nothing else I'll get to keep those memories of good times.

This was the first online comunity I joined that was in english. Back then I lurked a lot, took me quite a while to work up the nerve to try my English skills and chat with people but over the years the site became a part of my daily routine. I had great memories of this place and I will carry them onwards. A bit sad watching it go, but such are things in life. To quote some movies “No one is ever truly gone”.

Wow. I know that I don’t post much but I do hang around the site constantly looking at the old material while not logged into my account.

It’s been a decade since I joined here and I just want to express my gratitude for all the NanoFate content that all of you have exposed me to.

So what’s the next move after this site is closed down? Are there any other places out there for this community to still hang out at? A Discord group or so?

Spoiler:

I wow, I feel like I've been gone for too long. I had a flooding happening to me when this announcement was made and I got busy with a lot of stuff almost on a daily basis...to know that this site would go down is a huge shock for me and I feel like I didn't accomplish what I tried to do so many years ago. I did try to sent A. a couple new chapters for Magical War Radical Fate Redux but I think the link I used was for my SubscribeStar and thus ultimately rejected.......

As is probably the case for some but I've been a member on this site for more than ten years. I literally had some of my first experiences online with so many of you here and seeing that this is happening feels both final as well as inevitable, after all there hasn't been a new show or movie for our beloved NanoFate.

I wanted to make so much for this site. I wanted to give so much more....I feel sad and I'll probably will cry later but I just want to say:

Thank you for everything and I pray for all of you, your health and future and that we will still remember this site even ten years from now!

I don't recall receiving anything, not in my spam folder either, not sure what happened, but thanks for the cute picture that you shared here.

Also Rogue Devlin asked me through private messaging if I could give the site to someone else so they can keep running it, and I think it's worth responding publicly:

I don't think I would feel comfortable giving all the site files to someone else, everyone's passwords are stored in the database, they're all encrypted as you would expected but even encrypted passwords can be used maliciously if they were to fall in the wrong hands, and that's because I'm sure some people used the same password here as in other places even when you're not supposed to. Also mail addresses are unencrypted. More importantly though, the site is running in a very outdated CMS that can't be updated to an up to date version without losing a lot of the site's functionality and data, like the galleries and such, this old CMS also supposedly has vulnerabilities, I'm not sure if it's realistic to expect them to be exploited, but it's an issue, and an even bigger issue than that is that it's honestly a miracle that the site is still running, after moving to our current server I had to do the impossible to have it working on a more updated php and apache version, I noticed that I can't even manually clear the cache without all the site breaking, I can't even modify a simple color from the css and put it in the cache to fix the green background in the galleries (http://nanofate.us/galleries) without the complete site breaking and having to restore a backup of the full cache. I can't seriously imagine anyone dealing with all these issues that are nothing more than quirks and issues of outdated technology and incompatibilities with newer systems, there isn't even any documentation to deal with many of these issues online since most people will update their CMS as a new version comes out instead of still running something that is 10 years old in today's age.

I see, a pity then really. Truthfully I am really sad about this but at the same time I understand what you mean. Hopefully one day we can make a new site built up from all that we have made here.

Honestly speaking I was just thinking that certain galleries could be saved again (since you have them stored somewhere I assume) but if even that is too much than I guess it can't be helped.

Out of curiousity, is there any way to contact you outside from nanofate.us? Since you are the most senior among all of us I just felt that it would be a shame not to have a way to communicate with you like we all used to.

I will stay on the site logged in for as long as I can, maybe upload something once in a while for old times sake, and I hope that this isn't going to be the last time we talk (I mean on this site not in general).

Oh man, I made so many memories in this site... and made really great friends that even now I am still connected to. Been a member in this site for almost 10 years now and I would randomly come here for nostalgic reasons, but man, it really is sad to see this closing down soon...

I loved the contents here and usually come back for inspiration, so it hurts to see this go. I wish there was some way to keep this website alive or at least moved to a new one....

.... pending

My first anime fandom circle must come to an end.... Sad to witness the unstoppable regardless this decision is set in the stone or not. Attaining so much fun during 2 years communication within the circle, knowing new fans, Nanofate or general Nanoha franchise discussions, chats, displaying my love & appreciation of Nanoha franchise through reviews, not afraid showing my passion interest in Hayate-chan, etc.
Quality anime becomes more rarity especially this one which give me uncountable inspiration, encouragement. Just so aching to see a tiny glimpse of light this fandom circle will at least stay active. Or moving to a new one suggested from CryingLeo. :"(

Sad news, still not sure what to say tbh. Aside from spending hours upon hours here reading doujins, fanfics, and browsing the galleries, it was the place where I began opening up to people and making friendships, some of them still lasting to this day. I know that less and less people have been coming here over the years, and I also at some point started taking this site for granted, thinking it would be here forever. This news was a bit of a wake-up call. Times change, life goes on.

Thank you, A., for keeping the site up and running for all this time.

Take care everyone.
