According to Blooger Danny Choo citing the Yomuri Shinbun newspaper, the Japanese National Tourism Organiztion (JNTO) has asked for funding in its 2012 budget for paying up to Y100,000 per person for air fare for 10,000 foreigners to come and vacation in Japan.

The give away is to be advertised through social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook and through the internet via Google and Yahoo.

The hope is that these 10,000 people spread good advertising about Japan by "word of mouth" over these same social networks.

The tickets will be given away in the form of a write in contest/lottery where people make short lists of what they want to see and do in Japan and email/tweet them to a site the JNTO will set up.

Although Danny made clear that the contest was only in the planning stage in his post on Monday at 1700 JST, within hours the JNTO website had overloaded from people looking for more information.
Even now, which is now Wednesday evening in Japan, the JNTO is extremely difficult and slow to open (just tried it a few minutes ago).

This is a interesting idea to promote turism in their country, it's the first time I heard about this initiative.

Thanks for the info tomexe, hopefully someone from the site interested in this will get one of those tickets if this contest is made :)

You are actually the kind of person they are targeting A.

You have your own website and chat, so you are the prime target of this campaign to get people to post good things about Japan online.

Japan is fixated on the the nuclear accident, but that is not the cause of their tourist troubles.
Its just simply too expensive to get to Japan. The way the Tourist Organization website was overwhelemed when word got out about this proves it. Interest is huge and always has been, Japan is just priced out if the market.

AH yes, Japan is quite expensive, isn't it? (Forgot about that...)

Hmm, 100,000 yen is about NZ$1600...

Ya know, I still wouldn't go actually...

If we can get a hold of at least 3 of these tickets, we'll likely find a way to go. :D
