No problem. I've been wanting to talk about the movie. I don't know any Nanoha fans in person, unfortunately...

@StahnAileron

How about a bit on the characters themselves. Are they faithful to the original, or do they seem different in any way?

*same person*

And a bit of info on Fate/Alicia/Precia's backstory would be nice.

If the chars were changed, it wasn't by much.

Nanoha's resolve is a bit tougher, but that's because they accelerated the the beginning of the story a bit. All the fluffy Slice of Life style eps at the beginning were cut out. The Takamachi Family shows up, but none have a speaking role. (It's during a Nanoha monologue that they're animated, near the beginning, right after Nanoha tries to sneak Yuuno to home.)

Fate comes off as tougher/harden initially, but melancholy and hesitant, to a degree. The movie is quite a bit darker in the beginning compared to the series. They even revised the Jewel Seed encounters to fit into the movie format. (First 3 Jewel Seeds are encountered by Nanoha at the same time. Nanoha and Fate still meet on the fourth Seed though.)

To be honest, the biggest character changes were RH and Bardiche. RH speaks in complete sentences, so it sound more human than robotic in it original incarnation. Even from StrikerS to the Movie is a big change in voicing. Bardiche gets a slight accent in it's speech now, though it still speaks in simple phrases, mostly. (Bardiche has very little reason to speak much, really, since Fate knows what she's doing.)

And of course there's the design changes for the Devices, RH's being the most significant. Bardiche's re-design just makes it look more like it namesake. RH's Cannon mode looks and handles more like a projectile weapon. But RH's new color scheme matches Nanoha's BJ more, which in itself looks to have been inspired from her StrikerS BJ design. It looks a bit more armored.

Spoiler: WARNING: LOTS of Precia/Fate/Alicia Info - READ AT OWN RISK! This WILL kill A LOT of the reason to watch this movie in the first place.

The Fate/Precia/Alicia relation is greatly expanded on compared to the TV series...ANY of them. Even A's has nothing to hold up against this version...

Fate still believes that she is Precia daughter, but during her showdown with Nanoha, it shows that she starts to realize that in "her" memories, Precia calls her "Alicia" and never "Fate."

The movie then later explains Precia background; that is, the events that are the catalyst for her action. Here, they explain her life while Alicia was still alive. She was a working single mother that was rarely home, Alicia being left alone for large amounts of time.

She's working on some research project (I don't know enough JPN to understand if they mention any speficis or not regarding said project) and it seems to be going fairly well, so she makes a promise with Alicia that once her work is done, they'll have plenty of time to spend together.

However, seems upper management wants to accelerate the research to active testing sooner, so she starts spending even more time away in preparation.

The day of the experiment going active comes. Something goes wrongs and the local area get washed in a wave of energy or something.

Alicia is found later on, unconscious/dead on the balcony of their home. (She was out there and saw magic wave, getting caught in it.)

From there, Precia withdraws into dispair.

Fate is born/created later, and Precia initially treats her like Alicia...But soon realizes that Fate isn't Alicia, due to Fate acting differently than Alicia would, despite having Alicia's memories.

This baffles Precia to end and drives her more into despair, until and idea dawns on her. She turns the house pet, a cat, into Linis(-th) and has her take care of Fate in her place and starts avoiding Fate as much as possible.

Linith trains, teaches, and raises Fate. A little while after Fate gets Arf, Linith prepares and introduces Bardiche to Fate.

Linith briefs Precia on Fate's progress. By now, it's kinda obvious that Fate has become a tool for Precia to use later on, as she has nothing to do with Fate directly. Also shown is the stress her body is taking: she coughs up blood.

Later, Linith, searching for Precia, finds her collapsed in an area behind her "throne room", and finds out the truth: Precia has been maintaining Alicia's original body.

Linith confronts Precia about this at night. Precia lashes out, injuring Linith (Wall Slam).

End Flashback Sequences!

At the end of the Garden of time assault, Fate confronts Precia, proud to call herself a daughter of Precia Testarossa (as she acknowledges Alicia's existence, and wants to justify her own). Precia of course rejects Fate and her plea. She falls into the spatial/temporal rift, and we get treated to another quick flashback...

Precia and Alicia are on a Picnic. I forgot the details of the dialogue, but the idea is Precia asks Alicia what she would like as a gift (don't quite remember for what ocassion). Alicia says, "A little sister!"

Precia is kinda hesitant, but Alicia argues that if she had a sister, she wouldn't be alone when Precia wasn't around...Precia gives in, promising Alicia she'll get a sister one day. (End Flashback)

As she falls into the abyss with Alicia's body, she basically says something about always making promises she can't keep.

Actually, after typing all this, Precia is a char that seems changed a bit, but I think it has a bit more to do with how much more background we have on her. She does come off a TAD bit softer on Fate when she isn't directly dealing with her though. It almost seems like she says all the hurtful things to Fate subconsciously as a self-defense mechanism moreso than out of pure hatred. Though she still uses Fate as a tool. And she isn't afraid to beat the bloody hell out of someone who gets in her way...

Hopefully the above answers your curiosity/question. Please be kind and NOT mention any details in replies for the sake of others. If you must, make sure to use Spoiler tags!

Any other question out there?

The other reason to watch the movie is to see the revised combat scenes and choreography: The aerial showdown between Nanoha and Fate is COMPLETELY re-done, and it's choreography is much more well done. (Flight maneuvers make sense and resemble actual combat aircraft style maneuvers.) Seeing Fate do the Magical Girl equivalent of a Cobra was a pleasant surprise.

You're great. And as much as it was a spoiler I can hardly wait any longer to watch it, so why not spoil myself?

Seems Nanoha and Fate are still the great characters I remember them as. I would be sad if either of them got botched because of the movie. ^^

As for the dream sequence

Spoiler:
I feel so sorry for Fate...and Alicia. As if they didn't make Fate's childhood tragic enough in the series.

This movie is the most faithful remake of any series thing I've seen:

  1. Characterization are pretty much the same, yet expanded.
  2. Animation quality is modern and of high production value. (Kinda expected though, do to actual theatrical release.)
  3. They almost literal took season one, condensed it, and added new material into a movie over 2 hours long. (In fact, the newer materials total about maybe 20%-25%, or so it felt; that's just the additions, not including the completely remade sections.)
  4. Choreography is WAY above what the original series offered, and they were a high point for the series to begin with.
  5. Remade scenes were done in a manner to fit with a movie format and feel...without feeling out of place.
  6. Scenes that were removed were intelligently selected. (All the scenes they took out honestly didn't add much to the actual plot. They just added to the apprehension and drama in an episodic TV series, which wouldn't work in a movie.)
  7. They actually made it long enough to tell the full story! (I actually originally thought it was gonna be your standard fair 75-90 min movie. Oh how I was pleasantly wrong!)

Honestly, this movie was a LOT better than my expectations. (I was hoping for at least decent, but prepared for disappointment.) They were quite thorough in it's production. It was nice they went back to Nanoha's roots: simple and focused storytelling/char dev. (Versus StrikerS' diluted take on the series.)

Hopefully, if a "The MOVIE 2nd" is made, they'll take the same amount of care. (Though I think an A's based movie might push closer to 3 hours if they keep the same production style: A's didn't have much fluff/filler, and there's a lot more chars to develop, most of whom they can't skimp on without killing the series. But that's assuming they also add new material.)

Anybody knows if when the DVD appears someone would sub the movie?
Nanoha isnt licensed in my Country (Brazil) so sadly I have no easy way to get the DVD. =/

I'm pretty sure some group out there will. Nanoha's one of the better series out there in terms of actual content. Some might be put off by the Magical Girl aspect of it, but they don't know what they're missing out on, especially with the movie.

I wonder if there'll release it in the US in the future? They havent release strikerS here yet though, so it might be awhile (T.T) Maybe when it comes out in Japan (when ever that will be) I'll pre order it ^ ^"

StahnAileron

They might. I mean the CCS movies got release, albeit under somewhat different licensing.

As for StrikerS...Much as I love the Nanoha series, StrikerS was a low point: it felt more like a cheap cash in on the series, as well as an awkward launching point for new chars. I'm all for new chars if they add to the series, but StrikerS did too many, too quickly, in not enough eps; meanwhile, a few of the classic Chars essentially got written off/discarded. (Arf, Alisa, Suzuka.)

Still, they might license it for US release, just to cash in. Though the first 2 season have been out Stateside for a little while now, as you mentioned.

Ig anything, I want more anime (ANY) in Blu-ray...The newer series that are computer animated (not necessarily CG though) look awesome in HD. Well, anything with a high production value can look good in HD...(Though the CCS blu-ray remasters look great too, since they were done right...Lousy US Interlaced DVD release...)

Apparently, the movie is still being shown in quite a few Japanese theatres. With such success on the cinema screening, it's unlikely we will see a dvd release for a while. Most online stores have the soundtrack and other merchandise listed but, not the movie. So, pretty unconfirmed for now =/

Actually, the last showing for the movie was on April 23, so the DVD should only be a couple of months away at the most. ^^

Not likely. It's in theaters until Late July, potentially longer.

Nanoha.com continually updates their site with more theaters they're releasing the movie in. It was April 23rd at one point, but not anymore.

I know of like 3 groups who want to sub the movie, I don't think its going to be an issue somehow.

One has a source for the BD, too.
