What do you guys think of OOC characters? You know, when Fate acts like a delincuent because fanfic or Nanoha acts like a emotionally destroyed woman or whatever you can come up with...

Personally, I like the OOC as long as they keep that certain essence of the characters or are well constructed with enough time in every chapter to achieve character development.

Also, do you think Hayate's mischievos personality is fanmade and thus OOC?

I think it is, as Hayate was never shown in the series for being some kind hard otaku, hard stalker or an incredibly perceptive person.

I do not mind OOCness as long as I can identify the character in the midst of all the new perspectives. I think "essence" is a must. The girls are good people with some unique things (like Nanoha being stubborn, Vita being easily irritated and so forth). If the writer pulls them off, I went in WTF-mode. The plot has to be attractive as hell for me to keep reading.
The lastest doujin release (I Want You!!) shows an OCC NanoFate. Fate-chan mainly. But I liked because there's NanoFate and they're cute with each other, so~ ♥
I like MekiMeki Oukoku's doujins either. It's funny.

I do like Hayate, but I kinda started to like her more after reading fic where she's mischievous, otaku or something else. Way better.
The anime wasn't a slice-of-life, therefore I think the girls have not had the chance to develop some personality aspects in the anime.

Usually I don't mind OOCness, sometimes it's a good break from accepted norms and it can be refreshing~

....Of course, if you're going to make the characters completely different then I have to wonder why you don't just make an OC ^^;;

Cardboard box is here!

To read a story with a OOC is kind of funny sometimes. As kkattapiya said, I actually like Hayate the most when she appears as a very mischievous character, but I have to admit that sometimes the change in the character is to radical, and I find myself saying "she would never do something like that". Actually, I have even stoped reading a fanfic because I cannot stand the OOC, of course it only happened sometimes, but still. So, I will agree with all of you, if you make an OOC is kind of essential to keep a little of the "essence" of the original character. If you change the character completly, there would not be a real reason to use that character in the first place, so what's the point?

We don't really know how active is Nanoha and Fate's sexual life in the series, we only know that they have been in a relationship for many years in canon, and that they are a family with Vivio now, but their intimacy is never shown.

They most likely have a normal sexual life since they are still at that healthy age, but this is up to speculation, writing in a fanfic that they are a couple of horny rabbits may seem OOC, but if it's well written it may make sense in canon. I personally think that in a normal night they would be to tired to do much more than cuddling together before sleeping.

It's not the same to show Nanoha and Fate taking a bath, nude, that showing them making love in the bathroom. Even if this is a Seinen, I don't think they can show any kind of sexual intercourse explicitly. And it's not necessary, they don't really have a reason to suddenly start showing that kind of stuff either, this is not a romance series, their focus is in other aspects.

Nanoha can get away with kissing Fate on the cheek, or making a sly remark about something they did the night before.

That's what should be OOC. Nanoha and Fate are usually serious, composed, and professional; they are not the kind of couple that would flirt in public. And this is not the kind of anime centered around those things either way.

they do that stuff all the time in fanon but never in canon.

We don't know much about their sexual life in canon since it's obviously not shown explicitly, you could say that everything is happening behind the cameras, as I said before the safer thing to do is to speculate that they are normal in this aspect because nothing implies otherwise.
We have doujins and fics where Nanoha and Fate are for example extremely kinky or into SM or other stuffs, but those fanworks are not necessarily OOC, unless they directly deviate from the original characters' personalities (that is what happens half of the time).

Yes, I agree, that is what happens in most doujins.
But then again we have stuff like Sweetest Love, when they don't really need to be modest due to the privacy of the setting, and they can act differently to what they do usually when we see them in public or in their daily routine.

I don't think characters are free to act in any way outside of what is shown in canon, I meant that to be considered in-character they should act according to their canon personality (which doesn't mean that they should act in the exact same way in a very different situation).
In some cases, like how Nanoha and Fate act in their intimacy moments, there is a valid spectrum of possibilities if we consider what we know from them from the series, more traditional behaviors are options that seem more possible, and some crazy stuff that we see sometimes in doujins could be very unlikely or others directly contradicts the characters' personalities, so that's what I think we should call OOC. But for example, Fate being a bit more assertive when she is with Nanoha in bed? I wouldn't call that OOC, I think that is a valid possibility.

Could you define what is modest to you? Is hugging modest?

Lol, that's the official A's manga, chapter 4, page 7 (depending on which scanlation you read the page may differ).

I asked what you consider modest mainly because I needed to find out what people would find OOC since I try to avoid that.

I don't think that there is a way to upgrade Nanoha and Fate's relationship in doujins or fanfics, they are living as a couple with their own little family in canon, and there isn't much more than you can give them. Beside grandchild maybe, but they are still young for that.

Edit: Gurren Prime, check your mail.

Personally, I'm not really a fan of OOCness, and usually, I'm not interested in stories having "OOC" in description. Exceptions are the ones mentioned above: very original story/setting/other stuff I can't name right now. I usually don't read fics where characters are OOC (or worse) and try to avoid this in my own works as well.

Of course, I'm not talking about OOCness resulting from a different than canon setting.

As for Hayate... hmm, since her character is simply underdeveloped, I guess it's hard to tell when it's OOCed. I like her both as a serious general and as a funny and mischevious girl, though both without too much exaggerating.

I agreed with the above poster, its been awhile since I catch up with Nanoha-verse I had only watch the 3 anime series, Nanoha manga isn't my things.. recently I been meaning to have a good Nanoha/NF fics to read so I browsed through ff.net with the most reviews and favs... turns out most people likes Fate with penis a futa Fate! really..

It already worse when they called Fate-papa.... to made Fate more manly/aggressive just way OOC for her... latest fics I found OOC seems to be the trends nowadays... just now I read a cocky flirty badass and manly Fate, Nanoha being so silly, nyahaha too much, always being the bad one to cheating, the already married, the confused, and always in desperate need of help... so helpless. its really frustrating reading them as totally opposite of their characteristics.

I totally love works by Satashi, the author really portray the canon as it is and much more development in their characters.

Now, you said something quite true. Fate is being portrayed as the always secure, confident and badass woman (also a playgirl) meanwhile Nanoha is the shy, confused little girl that has no idea what she wants!. I think many just want to give them defined roles, but I don't like it. I think they're just fine without being casted to play ONE role (because for me they’re one of those couples in which either can be girly or no).
As for Fanfitions, They're dynamic characters but I believe that the author must keep some respect for the canon personality. Hell, in my stories I've always tryed to preserve some of their original traits, so the reader can somehow identify my versions of them as the Nanoha and Fate most of us know and love.

As for the whole "Fate-papa" thingy... I rather "Fate-mama" a million times!!!

Now, my English is quite rusted, so if your eyes suddenly star to bleed I have no insurance to cover it!! x.x

PD: ¡¡¡Repito, mi Inglés esta oxidado!!!

This thread is amusing to read. Pffft. Forgive my rudeness but the overly manly Futa-Fate and the overly confused Nanoha is a really funny topic for me. Haha. That was a good laugh.

Anyway, going back to the real topic, I think OOC is fine if the plot is well written and stuff. As long as the 'real' essense of Nanoha and Fate is there, it should be fine but in my humble opinion, I would prefer if Nanoha won't be that weak (since SLB says otherwise) and Fate won't be that manly (since Fate is the one who wears the /hot/ girly clothing anyway. Hum hum~). Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

As for Hayate... I guess, stories would be boring if there's no mischievous character going around pulling pranks and playing doctor love. Hayate fits the role so I guess it's fine since her personality isn't really fully shown in the anime series. I assume fanfic writers would just improvise for that and blah.
