On reflection it didn't anger me as much as ViVid once did, but then again I am not that work over it that much anymore.

Maybe we should see the important questions: what could they have done better?

I would not agree about Vivid, at least the manga version, but eh to each their own.

As for what they could have done better, oh boy that is a neverending list for me and depends on what constraints you want? I guess you still want Rinne to be part of it?

Why not ditch the tournament format entirely. Maybe go with what was going on in the first episode. Fuka fighting mob/street gangs. They showed some type of device in the first chapter, so maybe make that some sort of new weapon that has started appearing on the streets. Maybe make Rinne dissapear during one of those mob raids, so Fuka is going on a roaring rampage of revenge. You can toss in the Nakajima's as a place where she works for room, board and access to some training since she was not strong enough in the beggining to take on the bosses. Then half way through PLOT TWIST the antagonist was brainwashed Rinne or something all along. You can even toss us old crew a bone by giving us couple of cameos by Teana as TSAB officer in charge of solving the case of new weapons and eventual epilogue legal resolver.

If tournament is necessary then why not make it from Rinne's PoV and start with her sob story and with her training hard to be able to match Nakajimas to prove to herself that she is not weak. Maybe even add Fuka in who leaves her half way through since she is getting too hard and takes up with Nakajimas.

If you need Fuka to be the MC AND you want Rinne to be the main antagonist AND want to force all of this into a tournament, and I suppose the Einhart route is not available (making them part of the same gym/friendly rivals) some other way of getting Rinne and Fuka to interact would be needed. Also Fuka MUST have her time in the limelight that sets up her special thing long before the final fight and shows us that she is Rinne level fighter again before the fight. Maybe make her annihilate Jill's previous favorite pupil or something.

Oh and ditch the whole "we don't use any safety in our U-15 tournament because our fans want blood" thing. If protection is common in U-18 than it's a MUST in U-15.
Maybe even ditch the whole thing where everyone and their grandma now gets access to adult mode. But then again how will they then show big boobs complete with jiggle physics.

Make Fuka's style and barrier jacket be something her own and not a copy of Ein. Or if you really want to make another Hegemon user, make it so it's not a straight copy but give her her own moves so it's a NOTICEABLE hybrid or something.

etc. etc. etc.

Let's hope they can finally do something good with Reflection.

If anything it can't be denied that Movie 1st and Movie 2nd were pure goodness among the rotting pile of shit that is Vivid and Force.

I personally think the story is quite salvageable as it is. I mean the core concept has a lot of power to it: two best friends who find themselves fighting against each other, none willing to back down and none happy about it. Is it cliché? Yes, but that has never stop this franchise, has it?

Anyways, I would keep a lot of the elements they use here, just make some minor and later larger changes. Mostly on presentation but I would keep the spotlight on Fuuka and her brash impulsive attitude that leads her to street fights then to the Nakajima Gym and finally to accept Rinne’s challenge.

Then, and only then, cut to Rinne’s perspective as another character learns of what happen to Rinne and shares it only with Fuuka, who has a moment of actual crisis, but then emerges with a strong resolution to save her friend from this self-destructive path. Rinne is not conscious of she hating herself and her backstory is a bit more refine, mostly she seeks power and hates weakness because she hates her own weakness. Also she never loses a match until she faces Fuuka.

Then tournament fits well as long as Rinne doesn’t fight Miura, but rather Vivio and/or Einhard and beats them before going up against Fuuka in the finals. Also mostly just reduce the cast, off the U-19 gang and Vivio’s friends, also off Miura, Fabia, Ixpellia, Fuuka’s boss, all the fighters in the Tournament and whoever that girl that goes to the same class as Einhard is.

Also it should be good to show the bound between Rinne and her grandfather be more than he just talking with her once. In fact if we can say they live together for a while its better than the rush way they handle things in the anime, so the loss feels heavy and not heavy-handed. Make Rinne’s adoptive parents be more proactive…

In short just use the elements introduce in the anime that had potential but that they never show it, busy as they were with empty spectacle. Fuuka herself needs an infusion of character so making her more brash and aggressive, while not rude or bitchy, also showing she has talent from the start instead of using her as a glorified dummy for the ViVid girls to practice.

Some changes and we can keep half the stuff the guys animated already, so get me 7Arcs in the line I think we can save this one!

The trouble with keeping the tournament is that is pretty much eliminated the possibility of Rinne and Fuka interacting, short of their final fight, and you need that for the drama. Unless you mean to seriously cut down on the tournament's run time and after like showing couple of Fuka's matches and maybe Rinne offing Miura cut to their fight.

Also having Rinne defeat both Vivio and Einhart would do two things that are bad. For one it would eliminate the sole moment where Vivio can show that she is a worthy competitor actually able of winning. Because before this her performance could be summed up with "close but no cigar". Secondly and more importantly for the overall lore. If you have Rinne defeat Ein, and than have Fuka defeat Rinne, you are essentially saying that Fuka has surpassed Ein in like couple of months. Which is ridiculous. While I dissagreed with Vivid on quite a lot, having the newbies be defeated by the veterans was one of the good things they did. They already failed at presenting Fuka as a credible threat to Rinne and now you want her to be even stronger. Basically something would need to be done to explain this extraordinary feat.

Since one of the things where they did less than stellary was setting up Rinne and Fuka's relationship (she arrives with it premade and then solves it in the second to last episode), maybe set the first couple of episodes during the initial period during adn after Rinne's adoption. Fuka is still around so they can interact and we could see Rinne slowly getting colder and colder, culminating in their disagreement. Also you can work in more of what Fuka is doing when she is not around Rinne, mostly getting into ridiculous fistfights. This way you can also show off Rinne's grandfather more.

The first Blu Ray for Vivid Strike! comes out with a bonus manga, if we're lucky someone may get complete scans soon. In the meantime this is the final couple of pages where we see the Takamachi family in their first uncensored appearance in this series, also Subaru an Teana are there in another scene.

Nice manga I guess, not that it matters. We have an entire series where Nanoha appears without being sensor already so… yeah. Talking about ViVid by the way.

Moving to what 4th Dimension said.

I guess that is fair. My issue is what works and what doesn’t work from a story perspective and on that regard ViVid having the “Nakajima Team” be crush by the veterans was not a good idea. It took all of the characters we were following out of the tournament and just serve as a distraction for the trip to the library where they re-stablish Ein’s arc, which had been put on hold, and then solve it with yet another match. So we had an example there of a Spirograph plot: we took a lot of turns and went nowhere.

So having Rinne beat up Einhard and/or Vivio is not only good but it can fuel the story. Miura is not even needed for this and I would remove her. I mean why is Einhard this holy figure that can’t be bested? If it services the story she can be defeated. She has been bested when it doesn’t do anything for the tale already. As for Vivio… I honestly do not care about her. This is story is not about her and we might as well give some truth to the fact that she is weak and not suited for combat. So far they TELL me that, yet I always see her perform just fine with world class fighters.

I could go in to details but it would be a lengthy story on how I think what they did with the tournament can be rescue. I would just dome some minor alterations to the first few episodes, remove many characters and even add a couple new ones and I say the story would flow much better. It could use those side mangas, like it did in the previous seasons, to expand the stories with extra stuff that describes what you ask there. But for the main show? I don’t think is that necessary, especially with 12 episodes and the love of this thing has for long fights.

Vivid Strike! Blurays dates, info from /u/.

  • 25th January for vol.2 of the Blurays, including OVA episode 5.5
  • 22nd February for vol.3, OVA 5.75.
  • 29th March for vol.4, including OVA episode 13.
  • Some special event ViVid Party on 7th May.

I think we have 3 extra episodes to look forward to, but I don't know if the next Blurays come with a manga too, I think someone said they did.

Translations by TheRon, I didn't expect to have this comic so fast, and even translated. Thanks again for the hard work Ron.

Is a nice little manga.

I specially love that panty shot of Fuuka on her bed... it add so much to her character and what they were talking about.

Oh and let’s not forget Subaru's last words: "... It should be pretty interesting to keep following everyone's progress at the Nakajima Gym!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIlL0T2yTss

And then they add the Takamachi family almost like an afterthought... is like a reflection of the current state of the franchise.

No but seriously, this is pretty harmless fun all things consider. I just like to poke it with a stick and laugh at this.

I groaned when I saw that. In general Strike was much better on the fanservice and pandering front compared to Vivid but that scene in Anime still stood out, and they simply HAD to include it for the perverted crowd.
What is worse is that I decided to read this on break on work. So it was nice picture, nice picture !!CROTCH SHOT!!.

My explanation is that it's a lead in to the next part/issue which will be Fuka visiting the Takamachi's place.
But it is nice to see that Vivio's guardians are not a pair of living glints.

Yeah, it's inconsequential and relatively fun.

These small extras don't enlarge the plot, in my opinion they're mostly filler, but they still can provide a bit more of background for some characters.

Well there were some stuff they never properly explain, so maybe they could do that. Not expecting they offer much however, they tend to stay in cute stuff and not much else.

As I suspected the comic put my teeth on edge what with all the fawning over how good a fighter Jill used to be. Also apparently Hary and Victoria are members of the Gym where Jill is based. I think the comic is set couple years before the events of Strike! because Rinne seems to have only just started and has been training for just a year, while in Strike! I think she has couple years behind her.
Harry and Vic try to cheer Jill up, after she told them her regret at never being the champion, by saying that even they never become champions. In your case H&V that is not the shame since you share the same age group with that unstoppable destroyer called Sig. Being second to her is practically the same as being first.

I have to say I keep finding myself in position where I'm trying to absorb the lore regarding how combat works according to Strike! and yet I'm constantly struck how it sounds stupid a lot of time.

Basically this chapter of the manga is Jill fluff piece.

The OVA is better, it's set before Miura's tragic match and shows the thing that the show forgot to show, Fuka training and becoming better. In question she is finally able to defeat one of her gym members, Corona, in pure martial arts (no magic like in Winter Cup), after which they all go to a different gym to show Fuka their full powers and teach her that she still has a lot to learn. Corona and Rio get to showcase their full magical powers but the matches are relatively short and nowhere as exciting as in Vivid. Then again Fuka at that point in time is still not good enough to govie a good fight against a magical opponent. Basically parts of this episode should have been part of the main show.

The third Blu ray is out and was translated by TheRon, it comes with a new extra manga and the 5.75 OVA. I think the extras this time are not very interesting or relevant overall, but we get to see Yumina getting her hands on Fuuka, which was lewd and funny.

We are in agreement there. For all it's faults Strike was less fanservicey than Vivid, which was nice, but it was still more fanservicey than let's say StrikerS. Vivio and Rinne had adult modes whose breasts have been enhanced and they even added jiggle physics. And there were couple of scenes where their old preferences for fanservice shone through, like Fuka only taking of her pants before going to sleep so they could "accidentally" jam the camera in on her ass/underclothes.

One of the things that tends to slightly annoy me is when the manga is translated but they don't translate the dictionary at the end. Sometimes, at least back in the days when details mattered you could find interesting bits and pieces of lore there. So I took a look using Google Translate and dictionary at what is being said there. Unfortunately there is not really that much:

Vivio

Contestant Vivio. Reproduction shows her anticipated appearance at the age of 18. Her physique is blessed with height and long reach, and her figure is covered with a bodysuit and jacket. Kinetic vision and strong spatial awareness of her "eyes", avoidance/defense techniques learned through practice and precision blows allow her to fight using counter attacks.

As for the OVA, it was going nicely until the ode to Rinne began. Still I can't shake the feeling that a lot of character work shown here for both Fuka and Rinne should have been included into the show proper.

Is it me, or is Rinne's obvious provocation of Victoria tied to that throw off comment by Jill about her "finding" a top of the line opponent for her to train against.
They are also messing with the cannon again because Rinne says she has to qualify for DSAA by being a champion in under 16, while back in Vivid nobody made any issue out of Vivio and her friends being 10 and participating in DSAA.

Actually the DSAA is just the Dimension Sports Activity Association. So they are just the ones who organize stuff like the Intermiddle Championship which was the tournament we saw in ViVid (Truth to be told they like to act like we know a lot more about the junior magical combat environment than we actually do)

There is a different there since said Intermiddle does not have an Under-15 and Under-19 categories as we see in ViVid Strike!

My complaint was that Rinne says here that she can't join the same tournaments that Victoria and the rest of the veterans are participating in unless she proves herself in under 16, while in ViVid we saw that there were no issues with 10 year olds going against those same veterans in their very FIRST debut qualification cup.

Now if I were the writers I could weasel myself out of this by maybe saying that the championship from the Vivid, of which we only really saw the Midchildan part of the qualifications round, is something that is not organized often (let's say it happens every 4 years) and while it is open to ALL techniques and participants of all ages, other tournaments are not as open as we have seen with the Winter cup.
So Rinne's statement that she can not face Victoria and the others officially until she wind the under 16 could mean that other cups would not accept her unless she proves herself as an under 16 contestant by becoming the champ.

But that is me giving them credit when they could be trying to retcon the lot of how the tournaments work.

Yeah, but no. Again, they need to explain this properly so we can understand what it all means. I just think it would do a lot for the show to have better context

Side note: is Under-15 not Under-16

The extra OVA and the bonus manga chapter just got released yesterday by TheRon, along with the complete series in BD quality including all the extras:
https://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=915118

The manga chapter 12.5 is pretty much a sweet and short epilogue to the anime, and the episode 13 OVA doesn't have much more new info aside of the new standings in the different categories and the new champions, the rest is just fluff with the Vivid going to the beach, but it was more fun than I expected.

I don't remember why but I didn't like the manga part, probably because it had more gushing about that bitch Jill. The OVA is fine, it's a sort of fluffy epilogue that also does touch on the actual rankings of the characters post Strike. I'll spoil that part.

Spoiler:
They found a fucking way to giftwrap the fucking Rinne her fucking title. for which she is shown only defeating like one nameless scrub, since Ein has moved up a bracket.
Victoria and Sig have their match and Victoria wins on points.
Corona and Rio are shown sharing the podium in their class which is PROPER FUCKING magical combat.

Apart from that it's a day at the beach episode through and through. There are some interesting musings from Vivio to Ixy, about how nice it is that all of them can get along, which I chose to interpret by taking into account their backgrounds.

While I didn't mind them as bonus eps, this is just a gripe, but ova 3 in particular felt a bit inconsistent to me what with how everyone reacted as Rinne won, was it really special enough to warrant tears? I mean they had long since established that, barring Vivio's skill as an outlier, and Fuuka, no "normal" competitor should be able to even remotely close the gap in terms of raw attack power and endurance...But they seem so happy...Really, am I missing something?

Moreover back in ova 1...

Spoiler:
Fuuka managed to break Golaith's arm too with a basic counter, despite even Einhart having to break out the heavier tier techniques just to fight the darn thing
...should I just chalk this up to taking it easy and Fuuka being trained by Einhart?

Even after Vivid, Vivid Strike, and its OVA's, I just can't help think that Rio and Corona were still the most amusing characters in each one, and really had a near criminal lack of screen time and wasted potential.

Well it was Rinne's goal to become the U-15 champion. And she had just that last tournament to do it. Lucky she manage to try again so maybe it is a big time for her.
